Individual Psychotherapy
Psychotherapeutic approach
Psychodynamic and insight-oriented, I utilize a variety of techniques to help you achieve your goals. Primary among these are Presence Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), are psychodynamic approaches that are extremely effective with trauma recovery as well as a host of other concerns. Underlying both techniques, is each individual’s ability to heal themselves with the assistance of the therapist. This occurs through the process of teasing apart and learning about, different and sometimes conflicting feelings or parts of yourself. There is often a story behind symptoms, such as anxiety, of which we are unaware. As we get to know the part, we find it is protecting us from deeper often painful experiences. You and I are then able to gain understanding of the experience, its impact, and begin the healing process. Importantly, we can do this without you getting overwhelmed by the feelings. As a result, symptoms dissipate, functioning improves in all sorts of ways, and your clarity, well-being and sense of security expand.
Presence Psychotherapy, incorporates specific mindfulness techniques which significantly help deepen our work together. It enables you to feel calm and supported as we begin to learn about and heal the parts of you holding different feelings and experiences.
Couples Therapy
Psychotherapeutic Apprach
In couples work, I utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based model in which couples identify difficult cycles of interactions and learn to recognize the needs, hurts and fears that underlie them. Partners emerge from this process feeling more connected with one another in meaningful, supportive and secure ways and are better able to communicate. This is a blame free therapy which supports the primary importance of relationships. Significant situations which could be potentially damaging can be repaired. Past traumas can also be healed within the relationship. Research has proven this to be a highly effective form of therapy.
College and Graduate Students
I have a particular specialty working with college and graduate students. I have extensive experience at university counseling services and have intimate knowledge of the kind of pressure young adults/adults experience in these challenging environments. This time in a person's life, often at the cusp of independence, can be extremely challenging. Underlying struggles can emerge in powerful ways and can take students by surprise, even though they are very understandable.
In addition, I have worked with all sorts of difficulties, from adjustment problems and anxiety and depression, to psychotic disorders. Although psychotherapy can be hard, students also discover their strengths and develop greater understanding of who they are and this can be exciting and change can be significant.
I also have extensive experience working with doctoral students and the varied stressors faced in all areas of study, both personal and environmental.
